Glossary of PIO Terms

Active Physician Registry Listing of Physicians in active practice compiled annually by OPRC.
Active Practice Physician has an independent practice licence, and is practicing in Ontario for the equivalent of at least 50 days in the calendar year.
Addition Reason Physician was included in the annual Active Physician Registry.
Age Range Physicians are assigned to a 5-year age range based on (report year – DOB year).
Attrition Reason that Physician was not included in the annual Active Physician Registry.
Census Date PIO census date is December 31st of the report year.
CD Census Division is a second-level census geographic unit defined by Statistics Canada, below provinces and territories. Census divisions may correspond to a county, a regional municipality or a regional district.
CSD Census Subdivision is census geographic unit defined by Statistics Canada. Census subdivision is the general term for municipalities or areas treated as municipal equivalents for statistical purposes.
CFPC College of Family Physicians of Canada, the legal certifying body for the practice of family medicine in Canada.
CPSO College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the regulatory college for all practicing medical doctors in Ontario, Canada.
Gender Gender is based on data provided by CPSO and no specific distinction is made between sex and gender identity. Starting in 2021, an ‘Other’ category (which combines both non-binary and unknown gender categories) is provided in addition to ‘Male’ and ‘Female’.

RCPSC Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the regulatory college for specialty medicine and surgery education programs in Canada.
Specialty Primary practice specialty using nomenclature of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
Year Calendar year (January 1st – December 31st).
