Physicians in Ontario

Since 1992, OPRC has compiled and provided an annual dataset of all actively licensed physicians practicing in Ontario to the Ministry of Health, known as the Active Physician Registry. This dataset is designed to be the most accurate and comprehensive source of physician information in Ontario. Using these data OPRC produces data reports including the PIO Annual Report.

Physician numbers in PIO Annual Reports have an effective annual census date of December 31st.

The Active Physician Registry is compiled annually using multiple data sources which are acquired through explicit data sharing agreements. In addition, OPRC conducts a physician survey and other research to validate practice location, actual specialty of practice and activity level.

Physicians who have ceased practice or left the province as of December 31st are flagged, new physicians are added, physicians who have returned to practice are reactivated, and new physician location and specialty information is integrated. Historical information on Ontario physicians is maintained to permit long-term analyses of trends in physician availability.

The PIO Annual Report is published on our website at PIO Report Resources. Custom reports on specific data elements and reports spanning two or more years can also be prepared upon request.
